Heating with biofuels

Maskinfabrikken REKA A/S, placed a HKRST-FSK 30 / 80 unit at the disposal of the Technological Institute in Aarhus. For a number of heating tests with fuel crops. (The applicability of alternative biomass fuels in small heating systems from 20 to 250 kW)

The tests used the following fuels:

· Straw pellets and grains of rye
·
Straw pellets and grains of triticale (fuel grain)
·
Pellets of elephant grass
·
Pellets of pea shells

· Cut elephant grass
·
Cut willow
·
Grains of triticale
·
Grains of rape

The heating tests prove the versatility / excellence of the push grate boiler compared to other types of approved stoker systems.

REKA's HRKST-FSK 30

(Note how white the boiler is inside the firebox. This indicates that the firebox is easy to clean and that there is practically no corrosion of the heating surfaces in the firebox normally caused by aggressive acidiferous coatings).

THE BEST RESULT

Pellets of straw/grains of triticale burnt in a boiler with moving grate. The large quantity of cinders is of less importance as they are pushed out by the grate. The firebox is extremely sooty.

The unit has operated with a very low CO-content in the smoke. The content of CO indicates the combustion quality as a low content results in invisible smoke, no smell, and a very small risk of chimney fire. Like the CO content the other parameters are fairly stable which indicates that the firebox is not coated with cinders.

The above boiler is certified to burn the following fuels: Wood pellets, grains and wood chips.

The REKA unit, type HRKST-FSK 30 is sold complete with oxygen control, sprinkler system, fuel box etc.

Extract of an article in Dansk Bio Energi 45 (Danich Biomass Energy) June, with permission of the Technological Institute.

The rapport's conclusion is:

  • Wood pellets are still the best bio-fuel to small boilers.
  • It is defecate to point at a unambiguous parameters, that can caricatures a bio-fuel
  • Small boilers can no always burn a dry, pellet formed bio-fuel under satisfying conditions.
  • In pellet or cut form of bio-fuel (except wood pellets and grain) are less clarified to the markets demand of Bio-fuel boilers under 250 kW.
  • Boilers with a moving grate in the bottom can burn more types of fuel then boilers with a solid bottom or boiler, where the combustion is in a tube.
